A few years ago, I discovered the work of Vaughan Oliver and graphic design company 23 Envelope. I was not aware at the time that this graphic designer had done design of many of my favorite 4AD albums covers of the 80's. Making cover art for Cocteau Twins, X-Mal Deutschland, This Mortal Coil, Bauhaus, Dead Can Dance and Clan of Xymox. I had always loved these album covers, without knowing that they come from the same place. Here's a little selection of Vaughan Oliver poster and album designs. If you want to see more I highly recommend this book.
Vaughn Oliver has done a lot of great work, but my favourite record designer will always be Peter Saville, I think.
ReplyDeleteI love Saville too. Oliver however has a more decorative approach to design.
ReplyDeleteAnd its rare nowadays to see graphic designer doing decorative work.
I've been an Oliver fan since he first started with 4AD. His sensibility---like that of the label back in the day---really resonates with me.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing graphic design and recently ive been inspired by a lot of his works. Especially the choice of fonts, its different from what we are used to see.
ReplyDeleteHe definitely influenced a lot of graphic designers in the late eighties and early nineties.
